What Do You Do With Suddenly Curly Hair?

I spent most of my life with straight hair. You can see there in the photo how curly it was. I wanted curls so badly, but after one bad perm I quickly decided no thank you, I'll deal with the straight hair. I tried curling irons, hot rollers, the little pink foam rollers you slept in... my hair absolutely refused to hold a curl. It was impossible.

Fast forward a few years, and I was wondering why my hair had gotten so frizzy. I was still treating it just the same as I always had, but suddenly it was frizz central, and it made no sense to me. Then one day I let it dry on its own, and my family asked when I got the perm. That's right... I'm a curly girl now.

So that's great, most of the time, but there are times I really miss my straight, glossy hair. Periodically, I look online for hair iron reviews to see what people are talking about. You know, what people think is the best hair iron, what's overpriced, what's overhyped. I've got my eye on one particular iron right now, and I'll let you guys know if I like it once I've played with it a bit.

Til then... I'll have to figure out how to deal with this funky mass of curls. :D

  1. the exact same thing happened to me at 17 (and that was many moons ago)
when i want to go sleek, i use a sedo ionic one (http://www.amazon.com/Sedu-Ionic-Ceramic-Tourmaline-Straightener/dp/B000BTYGM8)
a little pricey, but worth it - but please shop around - ceramic is the best thing you can use if you are applying extreme heat to your hair.

you may also want to go to your fav. salon & pick up Paul Mitchell Super Skinny syrum...it keeps flyaways at bay & it smells like apples!

    Good Luck!!

  3. What do you mean what do you do with it? You rock it girl! It's lovely, I've never seen anyone with such a drastic texture change that was natural.
I found the best thing for my natural curl is to wash and condition just the ends in the shower and when I get out and it's still damp used a nickle size amount (I have hair a little longer than you so you could probably use less) of Paul Mitchell 'The Conditioner' from the ends up.
It's a leave in conditioner and it adds just the right amount emollients to tame any frizz and keep it nice and soft without gunking my hair up, it also keeps split ends at bay which I love! (It is a salon only produce so will probably seem expensive, but I've had the same bottle for over a year so it's very cost effective.)

  4. This is very common. Every 7 years our body goes through changes, hormones and such. My hair also became very curly ... after puberty ... then later changed again into loose curls. It was great I loved it then and now.

I agree with Anita ... rock out. Enjoy it. You actually now have the best of both worlds. You can have curly hair and straight hair at your whim. Enjoy!

I just used gel and scrunched after the shower and had the best curls.

  5. This is happening to me right now! My mom and grandmother went through the same thing. For us it seems to be a more gradual transition, but that's probably because I don't straighten my hair, so I've noticed as it's changed.
