Sketchbook update!

Join me again for a walk through my sketchbooks, looking at the various things that have wandered through my mind and found an exit into the world through my pens.

What can I say, it's crowded in there, and kinda weird. Ok, very weird.

I'm going to start out with my current favorite piece. I started doodling it without intending for it to get bigger, but... well, see for yourself.

This started with lips at the bottom of the page. If you look closely, you can see notes for the blog and a blog shopping list under her hair. I figured this would just be lips, because I doodle a lot of just lips lately. But then I added a nose, and it actually looked passable for once! But the nose needed something on top of it. There was a flower under the sunglasses, so drawing an eye would have been awkward at best.

So then I had a face, with sunglasses and a nose and some seriously-injected-with-lip-fillers lips. The face seemed to need something to balance it, though, so I added a headband slightly off-center for that pseudo-hipster look. My niece had colored the heart for me at the crawfish boil recently, so all I needed to do was add the purple band.

But she clearly needed more... the headband wasn't nearly enough. I started working on bangs, but didn't like them at all. I decided to start with some curls at the top right of the headband. Once I got to a certain point, though, I realized she needed a pompadouresque poof. (Yes, I've been watching a lot of drag queen hair tutorials on youtube lately. Why do you ask?)

As you can see? Her hair kinda exploded, in a gorgeous, taste-the-rainbow kinda way. I'm still not finished with her, and my biggest regret is that she's on lined paper. BOOO! Still, I can always redo her if I get the urge. She'd be fun painted on a canvas!

Ok, since I've got an absolute ton of photos here, I'm gonna tuck them under the cut so you can skip 'em if you want and they don't clog up your feed reader. You can thank me by leaving a comment! ;)

Octavias is fierce, and sees no reason to choose between a hair bow and a moustache. Rock on, Octavias!

Lips. Believe it or not, the first two images are the front and back of the same image. The third is from my dragalicious beauty from the top of the page!

This was an experiment to see if I could capture the look of confused disgust. Appropriate, considering this sketch
is from my family's bathroom sketchbook. Of course, this led to...

Bathroom sketch lady. She knows what you're doing, and she clearly does not approve.
This one looks like an alien chick to me...
... and this one looks like a friendly but somewhat-embarrassing drunk woman who makes lewd comments to all the
studly young men in town. She also chain-smokes Parliament cigarettes.

This poor girl is frazzled and wants nothing more than an hour of free time, and maybe some brain bleach.

Don't ask me where this came from. I was doodling during conversation with my dad and his wife, and
suddenly I had this wonky, Mad-Hatter-esque clock.

The drawing on the left started out with the lips, only they were going to be a dress. Then I got sidetracked,
and when I came back to it, I realized the shape looked like lips. Then I added a tiny nose
and those scary eyes. Talk about a scary, deformed chick. The plushie designs came from a magazine I was reading.

This one is pretty self-explanatory...
I painted this today at a friend's house. Her daughter and I painted for
a while together. So much fun!

These were drawn today for my friend's daughter. Clearly, Octavia is a new version of Octavias. The blue thing was supposed to be a squid, if I could only have remembered what a squid actually looks like.

Come back tomorrow, I may have a cute kitty video for you!

Wheee, sparkly!

    1. Thank you so much! It's kind of strange, because I carry a notebook and a ton of pens with me everywhere I go. I use them for jotting down ideas, sketching new blog ideas, and just clearing the crazy out of my head. :D

    1. Awww, thank you! Sometimes I feel downright insane because all of the stuff knocking around in my head. Being able to draw some of it helps my head stay quieter sometimes.

Well, that and it's just fun! I might work with squid and octopus more, just because I love them so much in real life. They're such fascinating creatures!
