Another way to do a sponged gradient!

Ever have a day when you see something that totally changes how you look at something? Yea, that was me last night. I was browsing nail stuff online (as I so often do) and came across people doing a sponged gradient in a totally different way. (See here and here for examples.) It looked much easier than the tutorial I just wrote, and it looked just as good (if not better)! I had to try it out!

This is so much easier than the method I've been using. The tutorial can be summed up like this:
  • base coat
  • 2 coats of white
  • 2 coats of gradient stamping
  • top coat
And that's it! You cut a piece of sponge the size of your nail (or just paint an area the size of your nail), paint stripes of the colors you're using onto your sponge, then pat-pat-pat the sponge over your nail all at once. The gradient basically forms itself, and you're left with a very messy gradient that goes all over your fingers!

I sent a link to my friend, needing to share my excitement over this find. She didn't believe that it could look so smooth and pretty. Then she did it- she challenged me to prove to her it could look that smooth and soft. What could I do?

I pulled out my China Glaze Electropop collection and started painting. I only did one nail, as a proof of concept, and WOW was it messy. There's really no way to avoid getting the polish everywhere unless you tape off your fingers like you would do for a water marble. I'll have to try that next time...

Still, the one nail I did turned out beautiful. This wasn't enough for her... she didn't think it looked smooth enough, so I added a layer of topcoat over everything to meld it together.

Even though I know how much topcoat can pull a manicure together, I was still blown away at just how smooth this gradient was! It was so easy, and so pretty. That's one stamped coat of rainbow goodness on my index finger there, and it's absolutely gorgeous.

She was pretty gobsmacked too. She couldn't believe how fast and easy it was to get a gradient look like this. She's definitely looking at her ombre nails kit differently now.

So of course, I needed to do a full manicure like this, but I was too lazy to deal with 5 colors like I had in my test run. I ended up sticking with three pastel shades- I'm fairly sure I used Dance Baby, Sweet Hook, and Kinetic Candy.

As you can see, it worked beautifully. The stripes on the sponge really didn't look all that soft and gradienty, but on the nail? Gorgeous pastel softness. I'm just blown away at how smooth the transition is!

Cleanup was an utter nightmare, much like trying to clean up a water marble is. I used cotton swabs, brushes and acetone, and still had a horrible mess to clean up. Still... it's SO worth it!

I can just see doing all my nails in rainbows. You could also do angled gradients or vertical gradients, based on how you apply the colors on the sponge. I really am in love with this look!

Although now I'm thinking it would be fun with a pattern over it- I'm thinking zebra stripes, or maybe leopard print. My husband laughed when he saw it and said my nails look like easter eggs.

So, what do you think of this look? Would you wear it? Would you change it? Would you put a print over the top of it? Leave me a comment and let me know what you think of it...

So many awesome ways to create pretty results!

  1. First off, I always put a print over the top of things! Haha. I'd wear these straight up for a day and then do a print or tape off some stripes and paint the rest black.. something along those lines.
Secondly- WOW! I'm doing this asap. It sounds SUPER easy, and the result is really amazing. Love. It. Great job and thanks for sharing!!

  10. I'm confused. Do I paint the sponge or the nails?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Think of it like rubber stamping. You know how when you stamp something, you have to put ink on the stamp before you can stamp the image?

Well, in this situation, the makeup sponge is your stamp, and the polish is the ink. You paint stripes of polish onto the sponge, then use the sponge to apply the polish to your nails. That way, the polish blends a bit in the sponge and on your nails, giving you a smooth gradient.

      Delete
    2. I was also confused, because in your post you instructed to " paint stripes of the colors you're using onto your nail".
This is an amazing tip though! I can't wait to try it.

  19. so fun! to make clean up easier you can first apply either chap stick or vaseline around the nail, it will wipe right off with a qtip and then a little extra acetone.

  21. FYI: I saw another tutorial on doing marbelized nails and she put lip balm around her nails before she applied the nail polish. It wipes right off your finger. Give that a try. Might make things easier.

  22. A little tip for you.......If you wait till the next morning in the shower, then use loofah gloves or shower gloves that are really rough and a little body wash and scrub your cuticles, all the polish comes off of your fingers like magic and it's just left on your nail. Its pretty amazing! You do have to suffer the evening with them not looking great though. But the next morning after the scrub down it will look like a pro manicure! Thanks for the great tutorial. I will definitely be trying this look on my toes this summer!

  23. Hey I have this nail helper thing that looks like a big compact but it has slots that you slide your finger in and it outlines your nail to keep from getting polish on the skin. It wouldn't work for water marbling but it might for the gradient.

  26. It takes a little extra prep work but I think it's better than the cleanup- you can just use scotch tape to tape off your cuticles. You might wanna cut it to make it smoother but it works wonders.

    ReplyDelete
  27. This is such an awesome Idea! Such a great blog to find, your ideas are so creative and beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Have you tried putting scotch tape under your nail? That should make clean up easier. You could just peel it off and then clean up the sides.

    ReplyDelete
  29. i was going to say vasoline around the nails might make things clean up easier??

    ReplyDelete
  30. when I have done water marble I put Vaseline around my nails. Should work for this as well.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm a little confused...what are you painting on the sponge? Nail polish? wouldn't it dry before you stamp it on each fingernail? And do you use a new sponge for each nail?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm planning a tutorial video for this technique. I use one sponge for the whole manicure, and if it gets too gloppy, I just press it onto paper a few times. The polish doesn't dry in the time it takes to paint it onto the sponge.

So, it's a simple process, if fiddly: paint your stripes onto the sponge all at once, then pat them onto the nail. Then repeat for the rest!

      Delete
    2. Awesome, thanks. I think I'll give it a try this weekend.

  33. Clean up tips: I saw this on Youtube. Many people use Scotch tape to tape around their nails before doing water marble (or in your case, sponging). There is a video on Youtube saying that you can just apply clear lip balm around the nails. After you are done sponging, just wait and wash the extra off. That's it! I haven't tried yet but it looks so wonderful on the video. Share with you.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I tried this and the polish did not transfer from the sponge to my nails. Any tips for what I'm doing wrong? I painted the polish onto a makeup sponge and tried pressing and tapping it on my clean nails. Nothing stuck!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Were you using a light-colored polish, or a sheer polish? The sponge puts a fairly light coat of polish onto your nail, so it will seem light at first.

Other than that, I'm not sure. Sorry!

    1. You may not have been generous enough with the polish, or you may not have pressed hard enough with the sponge. You also might have waited too long, although the polish tends to stay open a pretty decent time. I'm posting a video tutorial on this process as soon as I can get it edited, so come back then and hopefully that'll help!

do you think it would work to put Vaseline on your skin first, then it would just rub off of the skin and not be such a mess to clean up??

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm sure this has been suggested, but honestly I don't have the time to read through the comments to make sure....I'll just say it anyway... I 'paint' Vaseline around my nails before I do the water marbling technique. After you dip your finger, you can simply wipe off the extra polish. This works MUCH better and is much easier than the scotch tape method. This would work good for this technique as well. Plus, you fingers get moisturuzed. That being said...I went on Pinterest to find a good way to paint my nails, and thanks to you I've found it!!!! Woo Hoo!!

  54. I have tried like over 50 times for this technique and always failed miserably. I did exactly what u did, I tried pat-pat carefully, steadily, not too fast not too slow, but the color could never smooth out and always dried and clumped after a few pats. I have bought and tried so many brands of polishes, none works.. I am desperately wondering what i did wrong.. what's worse is that my base coat of white was always ruined right after a few pats and transfered to the sponge.. Aaarrgghh.. when i did got a good gradient once, i couldnt even out the bumpy surface with my top coat.. I need help :-(

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oh no!! Ok, let me think... are you applying the gradient over a dry base color of polish? The base color needs to be totally dry before you start stamping.

Also, the gradient will seem a bit lumpy until you put the topcoat on to finish up. The topcoat helps pull it all together and smooth everything out.

      Delete
    2. yup, i let the base color dried first. i stopped using white polish as base color 'cause it takes forever to dry :-P Well, i'd like to update you on how my relentless effort on nail sponging finally bears fruit :-) The culprit turned out to be: the s-p-o-n-g-e [and it took me forever to know l.o.l]. The make up sponges sold here are not strong enough to last a couple of pats, so i switched to sponges used for dish washing and the results were ok, well not as good as yours hehe.. Plus, i still need to look for a good top coat that's less expensive than SV :-) (Here it is extremely expensive) Just one more question: u put on top coat after colors are completely dry or half dry? Thx for your tips, Laynie! Luv your gradients :-)

      Delete
    3. Ahhh, that makes sense. That's one reason I suggested using multiple sponges, although I'm not sure I mentioned that in this post. In fact, I've even used the sponges that come on the old-fashioned sponge hair rollers! You can see some of the sponge tools I've made and used in this post:

      http://layniefingers.blogspot.com/2012/02/whew-its-been-busy-few-days-but-im.html

    Replies
    1. Do you mean a base coat, or a base color coat? I always recommend using a good base coat because it helps keep your polish on longer.

The color coat keeps you from needing lots of gradient coats to get an opaque layer. But you don't have to have a base coat of color.

However, a light base coat helps your colors seem brighter. It can also make sheer colors seem more pure. So I'd recommend doing a coat or two of your lightest color or white just to make everything look its best.

  94. Don't know if you have already learned this trick for easy cleanup after water marbling or sponging nails. Go to the art store and find water color art masking fluid. Paint it all around the nail making sure it gets onto and just over the cuticle. Let dry completely then use and orange stick to gently push back any that got on your actual nail and push it back an into the cuticle area. Now do your nail thing. Before polish is completely dry and definitely before applying top coat rub up a part of the mask so you can get hold of it with tweezers. Grab it and peel off the whole mess. Easier and more precise than tape. It may take some practice to figure out completely but it works amazing, literally no cleanup with polish remover needed.
